Caution: Pope On Board

The Holy See sees Iraq more clearly...

The Vatican has recently attempted to recast it's position on the Iraq war by declaring itself opposed to the means, but not the ends.

"The Holy See is not pacifist", per the Vatican library and archives head. The payoff? He says the pope never said the war was immoral, just that it should only be used as a last resort.

This would appear to put the frail Pope at odds with lawmakers in the United States, including Sen. Rockefeller, who now regrets voting to authorize military action in Iraq. While Kerry hasn't quite spelled it out as such, his comments do give the indication that had nothing changed, he too would not have used force to remove Saddam.

This position - and the subsequent fertile land it gives Republicans to plow - that had Kerry been President, Saddam would still be the dictator of Iraq, is going to be politically brutal.

When the Holy Father moves to the right of you on foreign affairs...
