Tricky Dick

The two sides of Richard Clarke...

Now that the 9/11 Commission has released their report, the next few days will see the unanimity of the panel devolve into something a little more partisan. Panel member John Lehman has started the ball rolling, detailing what he saw as a bait and switch from Richard Clarke.

We noted that CBS had become a launching pad for various anti-Bush vehicles - and they never revealed that they were owned by Viacom, who it so happened also published all of the books. Turns out that Mr. Clarke had a different tune to sing when his testimony went public.

We noted it at the time - the discrepancy between his glowing remarks about the Clinton administration and the abject failure of the Clinton administration to actually do anything about terror. It made little sense for a anti-terror hawk to proclaim that a near decade of doing little about Al-Qaeda was noteworthy.

It's hard to trust someone who has a financial interest in the story he's telling you...
